Na Pua o Kokee Field Guide to the Native Flowering Plants of Northwestern Kaua`i Katie Cassel 9781456405397 Books
I purchased the Kindle version of Na Pua o Kokee, and I will be bringing it with me on my next trip to Koke'e State Park. It covers about 75 native Hawai'ian plants, arranged alphabetically by their Hawai'ian names (when known; otherwise scientific names are used), and there is an index of flowering times. A nice touch I appreciate is that the author has noted landmarks and trails where many of these plants might be found. The reason I have given this book 4 stars instead of 5 is the lack of pictures. The photos are small, almost thumbnail-sized, and there is only 1 photo of each plant. Often these pictures are close-ups showing the plant's flowers. The preface states that "This field guide is meant to . . . contribute to the effort to put the images of native plants in the public mind so people can identify with them and will therefore support conservation of Hawaiian forests, which are being degraded and replaced by invasive species." Adding more pictures would help help familiarize the public with these beautiful and rare plants.

Na Pua o Kokee Field Guide to the Native Flowering Plants of Northwestern Kaua`i Katie Cassel 9781456405397 Books Reviews
A beautifully organized book, slim and light for "in the field" in the forests of Kokee, Kauai, or for browsing in any locale for those interested in the interesting and amazing plants of the highland forests, swamp and rainforest areas of the island. One nice feature is that the plants are described well even when they are NOT in bloom, so identification in the field is possible even in non-flowering months. Additionally, each purchase aids the work of plant preservation on Kauai.
I bought this for a close friend making a trip to Hawaii. She was very happy with it and said that it was very helpful. They hiked a lot and were pleased to know what they were seeing in the plants.
