The third in Shanle's aviator trilogy, End Game takes the listener to the climactic battles of WWII in the Pacific and European Theaters.
A retired naval aviator (fighter pilot) and former paratrooper, Shanle puts listeners in the cockpit as hundreds of aircraft engage in the biggest and deadliest dog fights in history. Storm the beaches of Pacific Islands with the Marines, parachute into France with the Army Airborne, and stand on the decks of the USS Johnston as the tiny Destroyer charges an entire Imperial Japanese Fleet by itself. While facing down the enemy, these same men and women hold together families and try to safeguard a small sense of normality inside of a whirlwind of death and destruction.

Frankly, I'm surprised by even a three star rating for this book. The author skillfully wove fictional interpersonal relationships within a factual historical setting. This is not easy to do... more importantly, it is even MORE difficult to do well. The author has done this and more, with not one, but MULTIPLE protagonists (David Brennan is the main focus of the story, but there are several others). He intertwines their stories in such a fashion that you don't end up confused as you read... unlike attempts by other authors using the same device. If you are an aviation buff, a historical fiction fan, or enjoy learning all you can about WWII, this is right up your alley. Somebody made the comment the book was "very droll." I seriously doubt the reviewer knows the meaning of the word. Perhaps he meant to use another word, and auto correct sabotaged him--I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I WILL, however, take issue with the statement, "good if you're a 12 year old." I think people from 12 to 82 would enjoy the book. I did... and I'm a long way on the other side of 12. Thank you, Mr. Shanle.Product details

Endgame in the Pacific Aviator Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Leland Shanle Thomas Block Project 7 Alpha LLC Books Reviews
A good continuation of the first two books in the series. Follows history quite well and ties in some historic pointers and milestones.
This is the last in a series of three novels all are well written, these rank up with books like The Raiding forces, by Phil Ward ant the Jack Stewart trilogy. All good and exciting books of WWII. I have read a lot of WWII novels but these I found to be my favorites
Thoroughly enjoyed the series. The characters are fictional but based on actual events as the battle of Midway, the Marianna's turkey shoot and flying the hump. In its own way it pays homage to what today is described as the greatest generation and their sacrifices.
This was an interesting read. I liked his description of aerial WWII warfare. He gives much detail, but in places...too much and he could have used a tougher editor. He gives a bigger picture of the war by jumping around, but it does limit the character development.
From the first page, this story leads you through the ambitions of a young pilot with the unquenchable desire to be like his dead father and brother as a top fighter pilot to avenge his loss on the hated enemy in the Pacific. The story switches to places where his mentors and friends of his dead father are involved in their own war efforts in Europe and the Pacific as well as back home in America.
The story races from action to action.
A very good read!
Another great novel by Leland. The journey of a young man trying to be his best pilot possible, bringing honor to his family, while on a mission of avenge...The action will pull you in as well as the character development. These stories are just more fun and intriguing with each you read. Historical Fiction readers and aviation buffs alike will be captivated. Start at the beginning!
First, I liked the book and would recommend it.
It did have some errors that were, at times comical. A Focke-Wulf skipped back a war and became a Fokker, mythical beings from Venus were called Venetians (that one slowed me down for a minute, trying to place gondolas on the Okinawa battlefield) and battle ships of the line were Capitol ships (governors' yachts perhaps?). When the marines suffered an attack of little gnarled trees, I almost lost it.
I found the jumping between threads somewhat disconcerting since the threads were so short, sometimes only a couple of paragraphs, I found myself getting lost, especially since threads jumped between theaters, aviators, civilians, guerrillas, marines, and even enemy soldiers.
